MARCO ISLAND

Marco Island which is located near Naples Florida is a great place to fly fish. Late spring and early summer bring with it a great food supply for the local Tarpon to gorge themselves on. Located in southwest Florida, the mangrove islands in this area has over 70 miles of great coastal fly-fishing.

The Tarpon will migrate up west Florida’s coast swimming into the many streams, creeks and bays in the area to feed and rest. Sight fishing for these 100-pound monsters can be a great experience. A local fly-fishing guide or fish charter will be very familiar with the water and provide a great fishing adventure.

There is great fly fishing in this area from Naples down to the Everglades at Whitewater Bay. There are plenty of boat access points in this area, and because of the vastness of the area, thousands of square miles, you will probably feel alone. This area is best fished by boat since there are so many islands to fish around. Having a boat will allow you frequent movements until you find just the right spot to fish.

Fishing in the summer months is best done in the morning and early evening hours. The winter months can be some of the best months to fish because the fish seek the warmer water in the shallow bays. This can make for some great sight fishing. Sight fishing is very popular in this area and there is a lot of great fishing. If you have never fly fished in Florida then you should get a guide for a minimum of one day so you understand the tactics and places to fish. This is not like trout fishing in a mountain stream out west, this is totally different.

Once you get the training and experience you will find that there is plenty of water to explore on your own. Because you took the time to learn how to fish this area you will understand what you need and how to use it.

Marco Island is a great fly fishing destination!
